Stanley Bailey

I first met Stan Bailey at the Brownsville Recreational Center in Brooklyn NY. I was a HS Track and Field athlete at the time and was interesting in weightlifting to better my performance. Stan took me under his wing showing me how to squat, perform power cleans and snatches. He also brought me to the Lost Battalion Hall which I wasn't familiar with before, but offered me access to weightlifting without traveling too far. Everyone had nothing but admiration for Stan and many spoke about how good of a lifter he was (Stan maintained fitness well into his old age). What I learned from Stan and the sport he ultimately introduced me to is staple in my life to this day (I'm 31) in maintaining good health and strength. Rest In Power Stan, you will be missed.

I competed with Stan for many years in the Police Olympics. He was a great man always willing to help anyone and share his knowledge. He will be sorely missed. My condolences to his family. 🙏🏼

So sorry to hear this. Stan was a great lifter, with wonderful technique. He had snatched 125kg and C&J was 165kg. ..quite good in the 1970s for a 75kg lifter.A N.Y.C. police officer, he was a true gentleman and friend.

I agree with all that has already been said below but want to add how great it was to have Stan as a friend for more than 50 years. He encouraged me as a young lifter in so many ways, and then in everything I did as an athlete, coach, official and administrator. He may well have saved my life when he ejected a criminal who pulled a knife on me in the gym. I will miss him deeply but remember all the good times forever. Love you Stan.

Simply put, Olympic Weightlifting sage. He's the old guy you wanna seek out some knowledge bout weights, so your quest takes you up a mountain into a cave and there he is. You're thinking he's tired and edgy, and turns out to be the coolest cat you know. Stan is cool as hell.

Stan's a great guy, lots of fun and REALLY devoted to weightlifting as a coach, meet director, Cat 1 IWF referee and competition secretary at national meets. He's a lifter who keeps on giving.
