I only saw lift once at a Senior Nationals in Los Angeles. What impressed me the most ws his incredible lifting form. He was most certsinlyone of the best ever technical Americsn lifters of sll time.Right up there with Ricj Holbook, boby Hise and Pete Rawluk. But he reminded me the most of all with Tommy Kono. I actully met Tommy on a few occasions-actually drove him and ManuelMateos around Southen Clifornia for a couple of way, ay back. Both Tommy as wellas Michael were both quiet individuals who did their stuff on the lifting platform. Never getting in trouble but just quietly going bouttheir business and getting the job done. Unlike more eccentric lifters they both had long eventual carriers in lfting weights.

I met Mike in 1969 as a shy and new lifter at Sayre Park in Chicago. Mike was friendly, welcoming and generous with his time in helping me develop as a lifter. He did this with many others. Mike continues to be a friend and excellent all around guy.

KARCHUT WAS A SUPERB STYLIST AND TECHNICIAN. THE PHOTO ABOVE WAS HIS FIRST ATTEMPT IN THE C&J IN MUNICH WITH 185 KILOS. HE MISSED THE JERK AND LEFT THE PLATFORM WITH A HEAVY LIMP AND DID NOT RETURN. hE WAS IN A GOOD POSITION UP THAT POINT WITH 160 KILOS IN THE PRESS AND 145 KILOS IN THE SNATCH. HE HAD A DECENT CHANCE FOR A MEDAL BUT HE WAS INJURED. OF ALL THE LIFTERS AT THE MUNICH OLYMPICS HE PROBABLY HAD THE BEST TECHNIQUE. HE WAS SMOOTH AND ELEGANT NOT BRUTISH AND ROUGH LIKE SO MAY LIFTERS. HE NEVER SEEMED TO WASTE ENERGY ON HIS LIFTS. ECONOMY OF EFFORT CAN BEST DESCRIBE HIS LIFTING.

mike karchut has competed in 19 us national championships. more than anyone else. he was one of the usa best reps. very determined and dedicated. he also helps other younger lifters with his friend steve gough in montana where they live. he is a good guy and im glad to be his friend. he also loves dogs and all animals. he gives good advice for your pets as he is very smart.
