During the late 70's and into the 80's there always seemed to be 2or 3 Armenians making big contributions to the Soviet team. I was glad he got the gold in '88. He was talented but also determined. Not flashy, but businesslike. He had to contend with Naim until he moved up to 60kg. He also had more world records than I thought.
