Bill Shine--See the results listed above--Batishchev's best total in 1971 was 607.5, so his improvement in 1972 was 12.5 kilograms. The 572.5 was not on his best day.

His improvement shown in the USSR championships from 1971 to 72 is incredible 572.5 to 620 Kg at age 32. Can this be attributed to a weight gain or increased drug usage, remember at this point he an accomplished veteran lifter.

Arthur--Thank you. I see from the Internet that you also posted a LiveJournal on December 18, 2016, which indicated that Japan's problem was with East Germany.

These posts are years old, but I just looked up Batishchev after seeing his picture on this website. In the 1968 edition of his book 'Weightlifting' Bob Hoffman wrote that the 1967 World Championships, which were to be held in Tokyo, were canceled because the Japanese authorities 'would not agree to let certain countries carry their flags in the opening ceremonies.' He did not specify which countries. Batishchev's lifts were 185-155-210. The 210 jerk tied him with Joe Dube and Batishchev won because, according to the rules of the time, he was lighter in bodyweight. That tournament also saw Ohuchi set a world record snatch of 150 in the middleweight class. When he was weighed afterward and found to weigh over the 75-kilogram limit, the lift counted as the world record in the next higher weight class. Other world records there were Nassiri, bantamweight clean and jerk; Baszanowski, lightweight snatch, clean and jerk, and total; Kurentsov, middleweight press and total; and Talts, middleheavyweight clean and jerk.

I've heard before that there were no World championships in 1967. Any body remember what the reason was? A little before my time. Thanks.

Batishchev won the special Pre-Olympic superheavy competition held in Mexico City in 1967 because there were no world championships that year and the Mexico City Olympics were the next. What were Batishchev's lifts?
