mini-bio by Hellenic Weightlifting Federation: He was born on October 13, 1971 in Chimera. He is 1.74m tall and he belongs to the Milon Club. He returned to his roots in February 1991. He was the Gold Champion in Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sidney 2000. He was the World Champion of 1993, 1995, and 1998. He was the top athlete of the World Championships in Canton 1995. He was the Greek Athlete of the Year in 1992, 1993, 1995 and 1996. He has studied Geoponics and he is a Major in the Greek Army. He is married and the father of three children, two daughters, Helen and Maria, and a son, Victor. His brother, Odysseus, has also been a weightlifter in the 91 and 99-kilo categories. Along with Kakhi Kakhiasvili, they are the only weightlifters still practicing who own three Olympic Gold Medals; whereas Dimas has also won 6 gold medals, 4 silver and 2 bronze ones in World Championships and 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals in European Championships.

Pyros Dimas was born in Albania. When he was 16 years old, he crossed the border into Greece with his uncle to find some work.
